According to The Daily Telegraph, after the outbreak of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine in 2022, Google closed its Russian branch and its subsidiary declared bankruptcy. Russian police have previously seized more than $100 million in assets from bankrupt entities. Despite the astronomical Russian claims against Google, the company said in its last earnings report, "We do not believe these ongoing legal matters will have a material adverse effect."

Experts noted that Google "obviously will not pay this fine, and the Russian Federation will not be able to recover the money from the company," and that all of Google's property in Russia has been recovered or seized. He said any claims made by the Russian government were only valid at home and that international bodies needed to hold Google to account.
