Pinduoduo Temu topped the list of most downloaded apps in the US

Temu has gained a foothold in the US e-commerce market.

After more than a year of hard work, Temu has now completely captured the US market.

 

Apple has released the top apps downloaded from its US App Store in 2023. In the list of free App downloads, the cross-border e-commerce platform Temu of Pinduoduo surpassed a series of popular apps such as TikTok, Instagram, Google and YouTube, ranking first.

 

This is not a surprising outcome. When Temu first entered the U.S. market last year, it made a wave of impact on local consumers with extremely low prices. At the beginning of this year, Temu appeared in the US Super Bowl, with the slogan “Shop like a billionaire”, which greatly increased its popularity, and quickly climbed to the top of the US app download chart, with orders and sales skyrocketing.

 

Since then, topping the US app download charts has become routine for Temu. Temu was the most downloaded app in the United States in the first three quarters of this year, from January to September, according to data from Data.ai, beating Amazon, the veteran e-commerce juggernaut.

 

Temu has also gained popularity in other markets, not just the United States, repeatedly topping the app download charts in Spain, Australia, Mexico, South Korea, France and many other countries.

Low price killer

Obviously, Temu’s success cannot be separated from the word “low price”.

 

In the past two years, affected by the economic downturn, consumers in Europe and the United States have reduced shopping spending. Temu, which continues the low-price strategy of the parent company Pin-duo, is appearing in front of everyone at this opportunity, which just meets the changing needs of European and American consumers.

 

Socks and lipstick for less than $1, shirts, necklaces, shoes for less than $10, Bluetooth headphones, smart watches for more than $10… Extreme low prices have impacted the world view of European and American consumers. Coupled with Temu’s frequent promotional activities, the launch of a similar domestic “friend cut” gameplay, and the provision of free returns or even “refund without return” services, price-sensitive people and young consumers were quickly captured by Temu.

 

And relying on the strong financial support of the parent company Pinduo, Temu also has the confidence to engage in viral marketing, not only in Facebook, Instagram and other European and American mainstream social media platforms crazy advertising, but also plans to spend heavily on the Super Bowl advertising next year, will blow their low price wind to more consumer groups.

 

In fact, while Temu’s low-price strategy is popular, many other retailers have pinched the sweat.

 

Leading the way are U.S. Dollar stores such as Dollar General and Dollar Tree. The same force sinking the market, Temu than the dollar store play more, cheaper prices, and even free return service, the traditional dollar store is really volume, but gradually abandoned by American consumers, market share has declined sharply, profits are constantly compressed.

 

Even Amazon, an old e-commerce juggernaut, has been fidgeted by Temu’s low price approach. As early as a few months ago, sources said that Amazon’s internal high-level discussions about how to deal with Temu competition. Recently, Amazon announced a reduction in sales commissions for clothing sellers selling for less than $15, in order to attract more low-priced clothing merchants to enter and reduce the price of platform related goods.

 

At the same time, Yama also launched a new policy of unbranded goods, so that white brand goods can also be protected by the platform, trying to use a large number of low-cost white brand goods to enter the sinking market and attract more consumers.

 

All in all, Temu, with its low price, is like a catfish stirring the market, and it is both happy and sad. However, it is still necessary to point out that in the future, Temu should also find ways to make up for logistics and other shortcomings, and strive to improve their profitability, so as to develop more comprehensively.
