Milestone

China’s coastal container ship operation will enter a zero-emission, pure electric era.

Recently, the Shanghai Ship Research and Design Institute under China Shipbuilding Group Co., Ltd. officially signed the design and construction contract for China’s first type and the world’s largest 740TEU pure electric open container ship independently developed and designed for Ningbo Ocean Shipping Co., LTD.

This marks that China’s coastal container ship operation will enter the zero-emission and pure electric era, which is of milestone significance for implementing the national “dual-carbon” strategy and promoting the green, zero-carbon and high-quality development of China’s shipping industry.

According to reports, the project includes 2 ships, which will be built by Jiangxi Jiang New Shipbuilding Co., LTD. The ship has a total length of 127.8 meters, a width of 21.6 meters and a design draft of 6.2 meters. It is classified into China Classification Society (CCS) and can sail in the domestic coastal navigation area, with the target route being Ningbo-Zhapu.

The ship fully demonstrates the design concept of “energy saving, environmental protection, economy, efficiency and intelligence”, and fully demonstrates environmental protection and technological sense in appearance color and shape, and is expected to become a benchmark ship in the market.

Specifically, the ship has four cargo holds and seven hatches, all of which are hatchless, reducing loading and unloading time and berthing time. The electric pusher compartment is set in the stern, which has one more cargo compartment than the conventional power ship, and has a larger cargo space. The bow is also specially equipped with a wind-drag type superstructure, which can effectively reduce vibration noise and improve the comfort of the crew’s work and life.

In addition, the ship uses twin propeller propulsion to improve maneuverability in complex waters. The propulsion system is equipped with two 875 kW permanent magnet synchronous propulsion motors, with a maximum speed of 11.5 knots, achieving “zero emissions” for operation and berthing cargo. Equipped with 10 box batteries as a power source, a total of about 19,000 KWH.

The ship also fully considers the safety of the battery, with a multi-level architecture battery management system. The box-type battery is arranged away from the living space and the cargo area, and the surrounding environment is well ventilated. The battery power system is considered redundant and, in fault mode, capable of sustaining effective propulsion back to the nearest port.

At the same time, a comprehensive energy management system is also set up to run the power station load reasonably and efficiently. When the ship is docked at Zhapu and Ningbo ports, it can be quickly changed by high-voltage shore charging or by lifting box-type batteries. The ship is fixed by a lightweight lashing bridge, with an anti-fall collision platform at the top, and a photovoltaic system above the platform to provide renewable energy for the ship.

The ship is also equipped with an intelligent system integration platform, with real-time ship circle view, all-weather navigation visual perception, route planning, unmanned driving, autonomous collision avoidance, driving mode switching and other functions. The shore-based operation and maintenance center can carry out real-time monitoring of ship equipment and remote control, bringing a new experience to ship operation and navigation.
