Indonesia’s trade ministry said

According to Reuters and other media reports, Indonesian Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan said in public on June 28 that Indonesia will impose 100% to 200% safeguard tariffs on imported products such as shoes, clothing, textiles, cosmetics and ceramics to restart and strengthen protective measures for domestic industries.

Indonesian Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan said on Friday that the policy would take effect after the relevant regulations are issued.

Hasan’s explanation: Because of changes in global trade patterns, many products that were originally destined for Western markets were rejected and instead sought other markets, including Indonesia. This shift has put enormous pressure on Indonesia’s local industries, as an influx of low-priced imports threatens the survival of local Msmes.

The Indonesian Trade Assurance Board is actively investigating to determine the specific tariff rate. According to Statistics Indonesia, the country mainly imports clothing and accessories from China, Vietnam and Bangladesh. As a result, products from these countries are likely to be the main targets of Indonesia’s new tariffs.
