A container ship full of Chinese goods is on fire!
On May 27, CMA CGM issued an announcement saying that since May 26, 2024, its chartered container ship NORTHERN JUVENILE had caught fire while sailing from Singapore to Pointe Noire.
According to the ship tracking data of CoSCO Haike Shibao, the ship is currently in the Indian Ocean about 600 nautical miles from Port Klang, and the owner is ensuring crew safety and carrying out firefighting work.
The ship is owned by the German ship financing company Norddeutsche Vermogen and the ship management company is Germany V.HIPS Hamburg GmbH. It flies the Portuguese flag and was built in 2009 with a capacity of 8811TEU. It is deployed on CMA CGM’s Asia West Africa Service (ASAFGR) route from Asia to West Africa.
The NORTHERN JUVENILE ship is fully loaded with Chinese goods. According to the voyage schedule of the shipping news network, it was once attached to Qingdao Port on May 7-8, Shanghai Port on May 9-10, Zhoushan Port on May 10-11 and Nansha Port on May 13-14.
Cma CGM reminded in the notice that the ship owner has requested rescue and has signed the LOF rescue contract. In accordance with liability under maritime law, CMA CGM will not be liable for any compensation unless the person claiming compensation can prove that the cause of the fire was caused by the carrier.
Cma CGM said it has strongly recommended that cargo underwriters be notified of the incident immediately. Judging from the latest sailing track of the “NORTHERN JUVENILE” vessel, it has been staying in the incident area for several days after it happened. The severity of the fire is unknown at present, and the cargo owner needs to pay close attention to it. As a rule of thumb, the shipowner may declare general average, resulting in no compensation and additional costs for the owner.
