20 containers overboard
Canada’s Nunavut Territory government said 20 containers and some cargo from a barge at an anchorage near the port of Iqaluit, southeast of Baffin Island, fell overboard into Frobisher Bay on Friday afternoon.
In a statement on Friday afternoon, the government issued a warning to boat owners in Iqaluit and Apex over floating cargo and containers, urging owners to “be aware of the dangers.”
Photos posted on social media around 5 p.m. Et Friday showed containers strewn around a ship near the port of Iqaluit.
The general cargo ship SIVUMUT was carrying out cargo operations when it arrived at Iqaluit Anchorage from Becancourt, Canada, on October 23. The containers and cargo were not dropped from the ship, but from the light barge deployed in the cargo handling of SIVUMUT.
The Coast Guard and crews from Nunavut’s Eastern Arctic Shipping Company (NEAS) began retrieving containers and cargo that had fallen into the water, the statement said.
The agency also said the containers appeared to be drifting toward Apex.
The government did not provide any other details about the incident.
Sivumut is an 8,000 DWT general cargo ship. Built in 2010, the vessel is registered in Canada and can transport up to 655 containers or bulk cargoes. The ship has two onboard cranes for cargo handling. Images that appeared online showed the ship docked with containers floating behind it. The weather in the region could also pose challenges, with temperatures reaching 20 degrees Fahrenheit (currently -3 degrees Celsius).
