反对提高关税!

This week, the administration is likely to announce a final decision on sharply higher tariffs on some Chinese imports.

However, under the strong opposition of many industries in the United States, the US government's original planned tariff increase plan is facing strong public opinion resistance, which may make the US government abandon part of the plan.

In May this year, US President Joe Biden announced that the "Section 301" tariffs imposed on China during the Trump administration would be maintained, while significantly increasing tariffs on China's "targeted strategic products." Among them, it would triple tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles to 100 percent, double tariffs on semiconductors and solar cells to 50 percent, and impose new tariffs of 25 percent on other strategic goods such as lithium batteries and steel.

However, the tariff plan is clearly unpopular. After the plan was announced, thousands of opposing letters poured into the office of the United States Trade Representative. From makers of electric cars to power utilities, a wide range of US industries are asking the administration to lower tariffs on China, delay or abandon increases in tariffs, and ask for a big expansion of exemptions.

That forced the White House to announce at the end of July that the tariff increases scheduled to take effect on August 1 had been delayed, with a final decision to be made by the end of August.

Now, as the time threshold of the end of August approaches, whether to abandon the tax increase plan has become a big problem facing the US government. It is also the first major trade decision made by the Biden-Harris administration since Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic nominee for president.

Regarding the protectionist measures taken by the United States, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin pointed out that the United States continues to politicize economic and trade issues and further increase tariffs on China is a mistake, which will only significantly push up the cost of imported goods, make American enterprises and consumers bear more losses, and make American consumers pay a greater price.

Wang Wenbin said that China urges the United States to earnestly abide by WTO rules and immediately cancel the additional tariff measures against China. China will take all necessary measures to safeguard its own rights and interests.
